Now That I'm A Woman,Everything Is Strange By Thomas Beard

Thomas Beard makes a few good points in this article and really helps me to get a better grip on what exactly we saw. The fact Shauna Moulton was utilizing "as seen on Tv" type of gimmicks in relation to Cindy Sherman makes a lot more sense. now-a-days in order to utilize pop-culture, you have to look at things which are a little more recent and relatable. Though, another good point made, was that  all of the "popular" items used, were popular in the way of knowledge of them, not exactly in the way of genuinely popular. Picking these items really are things everyone knows about but that they are uncool. I think for my generation, uncool can become cool dependent upon how it is utilized. For instance, heeleys are still cool but in a different way than they used to be. I think this may be my generation holding onto their childhood and the days when all we had to worry about were if our shoes rolled us forward and we could glide through hallways.

This piece speaks to this as well as a quote I found in particular interesting. "You can challenge the way you feel" I would agree with this point. In particular the use of the word challenge because this isn't the same as changing how you feel, challenging means you aren't always successful. I bring this back to the Billie Eilish video depicting you can try and alter your mood and yourself, but that doesn't mean you will be successful, you might end up dragging yourself down a deeper hole. I think this video really emphasizes my generation and hits on the fact that we do laugh at stupid things and when they are repetitive (like our looping social media) we still find it funny. But loop it enough times and maybe then you'll begin to realize how it's all desperate attempts to bring joy.

Notes:

Interesting mention of the different "As Seen on TV" type of products

"aggressively unhip"

Different ways of playful repetition

Mini-Mantras meant to be inspiring actually bringing this sense of anxiety

"You can challenge the way you feel"

The repetition with the "gimmicky" products, leads us to make something that is tragic, something of normality

Pop-art related work has now changed over the years, considering how overplayed it was when the TV boom happened with artists like Cindy Sherman.
