Kathy O'Dell- Performance, Video, and Trouble in the Home GS Response

I thought O'Dell's point of entry to her argument-- grounding it in observations of The Honeymooners-- to be really interesting. On the first page she points out that the show's reconstruction of gender in the home for the sake of comedy highlights something kind of subliminal and yet totally obvious: gender must then somehow be constructed, at least partially, in the home. As the essay progresses I think I miss where exactly that idea connects to O'Dell's assertion that video art of the 60s and 70s is the artistic equivalent of a child lashing out due to their 'trouble at home'. I see it the initial impulse to deconstruct what has been recognized as originally constructed but other than that I'm a little lost??

I'm also not really making the jump from The Honeymooners to childhood development or the body as a widely used basic tool in video art but I guess that doesn't hinder my understanding of her argument that much. I think all of that setup is just to arrive at her point that, like a child going through a mirroring stage, video art is historically defined by artists confronting themselves and a new type of gaze. I was particularly interested in O'Dell's discussion of Mary Ann Doane and Joan Jonas as issues of gazes, narcissism, and exhibitionism are things I'm interested in in my own work.
